Den Herder family

Den Herder family
this is here

Den Herder family photo taken in Yerseke, Netherlands, about 1925. Note the youngster with wooden shoes. They eventually settled in Wyckoff, NJ. My father-in-law, Pieter Den Herder is the baby. His aunt, Gertrude Den Herder, is sitting on the right. She married a Van Peenen and they started dairy farming in Wayne, NJ. My husband's grandmother is Maria Anna Den Herder and is holding the baby. It is typical in Holland to have a rock to put on the top of your pot when boiling cabbage. Because the soil is so sandy there one must buy a rock for this purpose. Fearing there were no rocks in NJ she brought the rock with her to this country. Little did she know that north NJ is literally full of rocks!! There was no need to bring one!
